The Shelter is a 24-hour comprehensive emergency service center that serves as a point of entry into assistance by coordinating services and responding to immediate needs of individuals and families until appropriate permanent housing can be arranged.

ENC1145 was a course that pushed my writing to its limits. It tought me to observe the world around me and to learn from what I see. This class made me a more aware and active community member.

Throughout the ENC 1145 course about writing in community action I have learned a lot about bettering the society we live in. The course made me a more active and analytical member in my community.
Being involved in the community is a fun and uniqe experience. I have enjoyed my experience volunteering and I am looking forward to see this organization grow

Students will expand their notions of “writing” and “text” and the diversity of writing acts in academic and nonacademic settings and investigate the role of “text” and “writing” in enacting positive social change in community settings.
Students will gain an understanding of rhetorical situation, audience, and genre in order to carefully and thoughtfully respond to a variety of writing tasks inside and outside of the academy.
Students will engage with non-profit organizations that benefit the Tallahassee community in order to appreciate and investigate the diversity of our local community.
This class offers a hands-on experience into serving one's community and enhancing your writing skills throughout the coiurse.
